Where To Eat On St. Patrick's Day Top
Despite our aversion to weekend bar hopping on St. Patrick's Day, we're not total curmudgeons about the holiday. A good Irish supper could be just the thing tonight, but it's up to you how much tolerance you have for the drunken throngs. The following suggestions should encompass a range of projected crowds. • For straight-up Irish bar food, the The Napper Tandy does a good job. They have curries and sausages and soda bread, like you'd get in a pub/restaurant in Ireland. It will probably be pretty crowded tonight, but if you can get there early or late enough, you should be able to get served alright. No promises on a seat. • The The Irish will be (we can almost guarantee) overflowing with green-hatted drunks. Despite that, we have to give them credit for their traditional menu, which includes sausages and beans, fish and chips, shepherd's pie, and corned beef and cabbage. • Speaking of corned beef and cabbage, some of the best options for that dish are your hofbraus. And the best hofbrau in town is Tommy's Joynt . Not exactly an Irish pub, but if you just want steam-tray meats and veggies and an imported beer, that's the place to go. • On the cheap, bar-food side of things, the Edinburgh Castle might be a good option. While technically a Scottish bar, they do have a lot of Irish beers, and they serve fish and chips — complete with malt vinegar and newspaper wrapping — from Old Chelsea around the corner. • Finally, for a slightly higher-end, sit-down dinner, McCormick & Kuleto's is offering St. Patrick's Day specials tonight, consisting of "traditional Irish fare." I'm just coming out of a bad downer so I'm not doing so well. I feel quite bad. During this time I am always contamplating things; politics, culture, faiths, social, beliefs and science. (If anyone is wondering why that order that's just the way I though about it) At the end of it I feel better and have a better understand of my own ideas on these things. But my problem is I can pass it on to anyone else. It get mixed up and confusing when I try to put in words but I asure you it makes sense in my head. Maybe that is enough. Maybe all I have to do is have my own ideas and be true to the them and that is enough. They are my thoughs and belives and I will not let them cause pain and will accept and tolerate all others. I just wish they would do the same for me and with each other, In other news the academic students in Belfast had a riot. It wasn't like the June Rebellion of 1832 Paris (see Les Misérables) . It was more like a piss up fight (see closing time anywhere) . I had to laugh a while ago. The student living area of Belfast is called the Holy Land due to the names of the streets there (Carmel, Damascus, Cairo, Jerusalem etc) and their has always been drunken studnets causing shit there. My cousin Sean (the one strucked by lighting) did not know this as he was a Dubliner. We he was up a few weeks ago he heard over the radio: "Students from rural backgrounds have been causing disturbance in the Holy Lands due to mid-night hurling games and alcohol abuse." So now my therapist feels uncomfortable with my doctor. So now he won't work with her. She was the only group health doctor that I was aware of that could prescribe my T, but now I have to go find someone out of network. And I'm sure the new doc will be fine. But I'm getting sick of having to jump through so many damn hoops. The doc and therapist are supposed to be working with me, to get me to where I need to be. But now I'm stressed out more than I have been in months. All I want is someone to stick a needle in my ass and shoot me full of the hormones my stupid body won't make itself. But instead I have to fight with insurance companies about liability, try to convince my bank to release funds from my HRA to cover it, and try to figure out just when I can get started on what should have been started months and months ago. I'm sick of hearing of all these guys who get their hormones so quickly when I get put through the ringer time and time again. Especially when some of those guys aren't even trying to do it safely. I'm doing the labwork, and willing to continue doing the labwork to make sure that I'm not going to harm myself. I hate needles, I hate doctors, but I'm willing to put up with it in order to have the chance to really be myself. So why is it that everyone else gets the chance to live the life I want, without any of the troubles I've been having. Source

Do you like irony? I LOVE IRONY. Here's one for the ages: my checking account at the other bank I (infrequently) use went negative. Haha! Oops. I made the same mistake a lot of the folks I speak to on a daily basis do... I made a credit card payment online and had the wrong account selected. I gotta be more careful about that. Especially since, while it didn't show up yet, I know they'll also be deducting a $28 fee. I did clear it just now. Pretty easy since my work account had, ohhhh, I dunno, enough to cover the payment that should've come out of there had my silly ass not selected the wrong account in the dropdown box. *grin* How ironic that someone who bugs people about negative accounts had one of his accounts go negative. I'd have made a courtesy call to myself, except we usually wait a couple of days before we do that (99% of negatives are cured within 48 hours, ya know). I probably should remove that other account from my credit card preferences... Source
 
Wasting millions, or wasting billions? Top
I see bonuses at financial services companies are in the news again. I was going to comment on bank bonuses last time around, but procrastinated too long, so I'll take the opportunity now. To understand the issue regarding bank ing bonuses, one has to understand how bank s operate. At bank s, most people get part of their compensation in the form of bonuses rather than salary. This allows bank s to ride out interest rate variations, which have a big effect on their income, by reducing bonuses rather than laying people off. That applies not only to the people we normally think of as "corporate officers", like the president and treasurer near the top of the company, but also to working level employees making five figures rather than six or seven. Yeah, in bank ing parlance, that lady you talk to for a car loan is an "officer", and gets a significant amount of her pay in the form of a bonus. So when the wags in Washington start criticizing Wall Street "bonuses bank s start keeping a low profile by cutting everyone's bonuses - including that of my wife, who works in the IT department. Not exactly the best way to avoid deepening the recession! This makes me take the news regarding AIG with a grain of salt. Unlike most of the bank s, AIG was definitely mismanaged, but the top people who were most responsible for mismanagement are already gone. It sounds like the government might just be trying to direct anger at the bailout to folks who might well have been managing the parts of AIG that were doing perfectly fine. Not exactly the best way for a stockholder to behave. In addition, it seems like some of those bonuses, or perhaps all of them, were already contractually obligated. Asking to cut them is like asking GM to take back last year's overtime pay from their assembly line workers because the cars they made didn't sell well. They had a contract, they did the work according to the contract, so they should get paid according to the contract. If the contract is bad, see if you can renegotiate it, but don't try to violate the 7th amendment takings clause. Finally, it's to be noted that the total amount of the AIG bonuses in question is only about 1/1000th the amount that the government is spending on bailing out AIG (165 million vs 171 Billion - 171,000 million - which itself is small compared to recent federal spending). If these bonuses are profligate, the government is being 1000 times as profligate by doing the bailout in the first place. If anyone needs to commit seppuku, maybe it's Sen. Grassley, Barney Frank, and the rest of the "bailout congress". Source

We had a nice breakfast at Flap Jack. I had the steak and eggs again. Then we hit up a few stores for a futile search for sugar free Jelly Belly jelly beans, before ultimately getting some pre-grocery shopping done at Sam's Club. Sam's Club scored us a win on the lunchmeat and tortilla front. I can't have bread anymore. So, I've been trying like mad to find a low-carb tortilla brand that doesn't break the bank . As we discovered, Sam's has whole wheat tortillas that clock in at 13g of carbs, 7g from fiber. For a diabetic, that is sweet, sweet music. I actually just tried one and I gotta say, I like 'em. Not crumbly. Didn't crack. Decently soft. The taste and texture are right. WIN! We ultimately tracked down some sugar free Jelly Bellys at Meijer. Let me cut to the chase: they suck. They're waxy, the inner slurry is chalky, and the taste isn't quite right. They also upset my stomach. No surprise, since the sweetener is maltitol, but still... they're no replacement for real Jelly Bellys. Which means I'm done with that brand. Sucks. But hey, we had a nice lunch at Applebee's. I had the quesadilla burger minus the Mexi-Ranch dressing. That dressing is LOADED with carbs. The thing is, the burger doesn't need that junk. The pico de gallo and cheese they use provides a good gooey-ness that helps keep the burger inside the toasted tortilla. It's got 70g of carbs with the mexi-ranch and 15g of carbs without. Today was madness at the credit union. Madness! Lansing teacher payday had the branches packed. And we had a ton of collection cases coming out of the woodwork. Not a bad thing at all, really, since we made back some money and helped a few folks lower their payments. But maaaan, I had to go upstairs on six occasions just to meet with members. That's a lot, when you consider face-to-face meetings tend to take 20 to 30 minutes. No time to think. Which was good. Because after yesterday, I didn't want to dwell. It was so busy, I told my boss "I don't even have to tell you I didn't hit the delinquency queue today... and I bet you know why." And she totally knew. She was running ragged too. It is tough out there. Working at a financial institution, I see it every day, in real terms. I hear the stories. I see how out-of-work people are desperately fighting to keep a grip without delving into bank ruptcy. From what I've been told, we used to do like one "workout" refinance a week. Now, we're doing three or four, and countless alternate-payments (where we cut payments in half for six months). So, to all those people that I didn't order repossessions on today, know that you got to keep your cars because I was busy helping the people that came to us and asked for help -- the ones that did not dodge us when we called, and that took responsibility for their situations. Those people are our priority. But fret not, come Monday, we'll probably be siccing the repo man on ya... Now, three other things: 1. Lindsay's last day was today. Bittersweet. I've made no secret of the fact that she was a ray of sunshine in that hectic insanity I now call a job. I still can't explain exactly why she was such a panacea for me. Doesn't matter, really. But I got to say a proper goodbye, we spent some time chit-chatting, and we shared a hug... so, hey, can't beat that. 2. A lease renewal was stuck to our door when we got home. Hah! Nothing is set in stone yet, but they gotta do better than a piddly $200 promo credit to get is to re-up for another year on this overpriced, tiny apartment that's located near nothing (in a neighborhood with nearly no sidewalks!). 3. Today was bullshit. Not horrible... just, bullshit. Woke up early when Cindy noticed a local TV station wasn't coming in after the digital switch. Drove to work early because I need to reclaim time that I'll lose from an ill-timed doctor's appointment on Thursday. Work was mad busy. Part because of the holiday pushing things back, part because I had a ton of unfinished stuff from Friday (thanks to our down collections system), and in part because Marie was out. I got a headache today from focusing too much. Got out of work, hightailed it to GameStop, and they didn't have my expensive, fully paid off, preordered joystick in. Lots of stores got them in today. But nooooo, I have to wait until 3/1. Such anger. It's paid for and I didn't get one! And it's not like I can buy one at a store, they're pre-sold out! I'd rage about that less, but c'mon... Street Fighter II is one of the FEW things that brings me joy during my precious moments of free-time. All I want is to be able to play it the right way. I got to pick up Street Fighter IV today and I hardly care. It was that joystick I wanted! Ugh! I bought some cards off of someone on eBay. Wanted to pay with my credit card, but the new checkout didn't even ask. It tried my old bank account first. I haven't used that sucker in months! Thankfully I had enough to cover it. We've heard a lot about government bailouts in the past few months. So what exactly are these bailouts? After hearing some more griping about one of them - the part of the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP) that was devoted to stable bank s like Wells Fargo and bank of America - I decided to read up on some of the details. It appears that this $250 Billion program works as follows. The federal government purchases preferred stock from the bank s for cash. The bank s then pay the federal government interest at an annual rate of 5% for the first three years, and 9% thereafter. That's a pretty high interest rate when the discount rate - the rate at which bank s can borrow from the Federal Reserve - is running at less than 1%, but if a bank is in trouble, the money might help them survive a run by depositors. The bank s are allowed to pay the money back, but not until the first three years are up. Most of the funds weren't used to help bank s that were in trouble though. Rather, stable bank s were pressured into the program. Assuming that this was not just a cynical way for the government to extract above market interest rates from successful bank s, what were Bernanke and treasury department trying to do? Well, one clue comes from an exchange that happened during that meeting was when one of the bank presidents asked if the government "investment" was to be treated as debt on their balance sheet. According to normal accounting rules it is: it's money that has to be paid back eventually, and on which interest is paid in the meantime. Bernanke and Paulson, however, agreed it should be treated as equity, and that they would change the rules if necessary to do so. Why is this important? It's important because there are rules governing bank s that require them to maintain debt to equity ratios within certain limits. Adding money to the "equity" side of the balance sheet allows the bank s to pile up more debt - that is, lend more money. Adding money to the debt side of the balance sheet would do the opposite: it would constrain lending further. The government wanted the bank s to lend more, not less, to avoid an economic downturn, so the money was categorized as "equity". Of course, calling it equity doesn't make it so; the bank s still have to pay interest on it, and they still have to pay it back after three years. Some investment bank s might have lent to the limits of the regulations anyway, but those bank s are, not coincidentally bank rupt now. The bank s that got the first round of TARP funds were some of the stablest and most conservative bank s in the country - and those bank s are likely to act as if the funds are debt, even if their balance sheets list them as equity. They're not going to use the money to extend even more loans that put them closer to going under. What's the net result? The big, stable bank s are burdened with interest payments to the government that restrict their lending just when it's thought the economy needs easier money. Plus they get tagged with the "bailed out" label when the reality is closer to the bank s propping up the government.
