Carly Fiorina joins in the Mexican bashing at the CA GOP Convention

Carly Fiorina, a possible contender in the party’s U.S. Senate primary next year to challenge Democratic incumbent Barbara Boxer, made immigrants “the butt of a joke in a hotel penthouse breakfast speech,” at the California Republican Party State Convention in Sacramento, according to the L.A. Times.

When her family first moved to California, Fiorina recalled, her little brother asked, “Mommy, do they speak English there?”

Nice.  Bad enough that Fiorina wrecked HP.  Now she wants to finish wrecking the California GOP - and God knows what damage she would do as a U.S. Senator.  No thank you!

State Senator Abel Maldonado didn’t laught at Fiorina’s lame joke.  “”If we don’t change, we’re going to go back to the old ways, and we’re going to continue to lose,” said Maldonado, who faulted the party’s hard line against illegal immigration. “They don’t get it on illegal immigration,” he said.”

Fiorina wasn’t the only doofus at the California GOP Convention.  Campaign consultant Wayne Johnson told the L.A. Times that the party needs to attract the black and Latino voters who backed Proposition 8, the ballot measure that banned same-sex marriage.  “I really, truly believe that’s where we need to go,” he said.

Great.  Johnson wants to crank up the hate machine.

But State Senator Tony Strickland of Thousand Oaks, backed away from Johnson’s message, saying that the party’s future lies in drawing younger voters through Facebook, Twitter and text messages.

“Instead of issues,” he said, “it’s more about the way we communicate.”

Well, when your main issues are bashing gays and Latinos, then perhaps it would be best to focus on something else…

Quite frankly, the best message the GOP can use now is cutting taxes and slashing government waste.  But when you consider how many Republican legislators voted for the Democrat’s ruinous state budget, it is obvious that the party is not unified enough to present a united fiscally conservative front.

It is fitting that the main attraction at the convention was a life-sized cardboard rendition of loser V.P. candidate Sarah Palin.  She is the perfect emblem of a party that is dying before our very eyes.

DALY DEFIES TOUGH TIMES; OPENS NEW OFFICE. GOVERNMENT OUR ONLY GROWTH INDUSTRY

Very recently, OC County Clerk Tom Daly opened a branch office in downtown Fullerton. Now, while some may think this is a good thing, we here at FFFF are caused to wonder about the expansion of the Clerk's premises while the County is in major financial retrenchment mode with lots of folks getting pink slips. Fullerton has done just fine without a Clerk/Recorder branch office for over 120 years. Now the Clerk/Recorder gets to pay rent every month for its posh new digs while already occupying space, bought and paid for, at the County Civic Center.

Is the opening of this office and the soon-to-be announced candidacy of Daly for 4th District supervisor coincidental? We think not. Winning Fullerton is key to winning the 4th and it sure looks like Daly is trying hard to raise his visibility level in F-town. If not, why did he wait until his seventh year in office to make this move? Oh, we truly are cynical, aren't we?

Rather than expand his physical presence in the County, Daly ought to be figuring out a way to computerize the Clerk/Recorder function completely thus saving people money and the hassle of having to go his offices at all, wherever they may be.  Click here to read more.

One in Five people on public assistance in L.A. County

One in five Los Angeles County residents — nearly 2.2 million people — are receiving public assistance payments or benefits, a level county officials say will rise significantly over the coming months as the fallout from the recession continues.   The percentage of people on county aid already equals the figure at the height of the 2001-03 recession and far exceeds the one in seven who needed help during the economic downturn in the early 1990s and the one in nine assisted in the collapse of the early 1980s.  County officials warn that tens of thousands of additional frustrated job seekers — unemployment in the county currently stands at 9.5% — are expected to seek aid to weather the persistent recession once their other benefits run out.    Full Story at today’s L.A.Times.

The rising demand has left public assistance offices ill-equipped to deal with the growing multitude of indigent people. In some locations, lines routinely snake hundreds of feet outside entrances.

“We have the highest human service burden of any county in the country in sheer numbers,” Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said.

“Two million people is the size of some countries; that’s how big our problem is,” he said.

To have reached the point of receiving county aid, recipients usually have little left.

Qualifying for help most often means they already have run out of unemployment insurance and drained their bank accounts and other assets.

Said one applicant, “This is getting scary.  There are no jobs”.

What’s in the future for Orange County?

Gov. Schwarzenegger and George Stephanopolous read Orange Juice blog posts!

On Friday Feb 20th I posted an announcement from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, HJTA, in which they intend to oppose the just approved state budget where voter approval is required in a Special Election.

In my closing comments of that post I referred to an event featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger that Cutting Edge-a Talk Show producer Ron Winship and I covered at the OC Fair Grounds in Oct of 2003.

As credentialed members of the press we were sent to join our peers on a riser with Network and Cable TV crew members and other reporters covering the appearance of gubernatorial candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger. As stated in my post the candidate’s appearance ended with someone dropping a wrecking ball, when prompted, on an old white vehicle with Gray Davis’s name painted on the side.

I received a voice mail message after church that George Stephanopoulos referred to the same (ABC) archive coverage on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos program this morning. On that program, I am told, governor Schwarzenegger acknowledged making those statements at that event which I posted in my earlier Juice story adding something to the effect that “times have changed.”

Here is the program link. http://abcnews.go.com/ThisWeek

Question #1. As California voters decided to recall governor Gray Davis for his huge budget deficit, his plans to increase the car tax, and Arnold’s comments about the prior administration engaging in “spend, spend, spend” followed by “tax, tax, tax,” and, Whereas governor Schwarzenegger has followed suite, should he too be recalled? Just curious.

Question #2. Based on his performance as governor would you vote for Arnold Schwarzenegger for US Senate as we have heard of a trial balloon of his running to oppose Barbara Boxer?

Fullerton pastor who was attacked by gang was on probation for lewd conduct

What is up with Fullerton’s Rev. Willie Holmes?  The local media went nuts earlier this month when he was allegedly attacked by gang members in Fullerton.

“According to Holmes, the youths shouted “FTT” — short for Fullerton Tokers Town, a local Latino gang — and ran in front of the car. He said he drove around them and headed to the church, where he and his passengers ran from the car and hid inside. The attackers followed on foot and smashed the windows of the pastor’s car and the church office,” according to the L.A. Times.

However, it turns out there is more to this story than first meets the eye.

“Pastor Willie Ray Holmes, whose church and family were attacked last week, was ordered to report to the Orange County Jail next month for a probation violation stemming from a lewd-conduct conviction,” according to the O.C. Register.

And it turns out that Holmes was engaged in such actions as recently as Feb. 7!  Here are a few excerpts from the Register story about this mess:

Holmes, a pastor at Majesty Christian Fellowship, pleaded guilty to engaging in lewd conduct in a Nov. 30, 2006, incident. He was sentenced to three years’ probation for the misdemeanor, court records show.

Later, Holmes pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of contempt of court for violating the terms of his probation Feb. 4, 2008. He was sentenced to 360 days in jail and three years’ probation, and ordered to stay away from Hillcrest Park in Fullerton.

Holmes was arrested three days later, on Feb. 7, 2008, on suspicion of misdemeanor indecent exposure, lewd conduct in a public place and loitering around a public toilet. The indecent exposure count was dismissed, and he pleaded guilty to the other two counts. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail and three years’ probation.

D’oh!  And Holmes’ wife says she doesn’t know anything about any of this and she wants to know what happened.  I smell a divorce cooking!

And there may be even more to this story.  Gustavo Arellano published a letter in his Navel Gazing blog, by a Fullerton community activist.  In that letter the activist disclosed that some gang members told him that the pastor’s son disrespected them, which led to the attack.  And much of the protesting against the attack quickly devolved into Latino bashing.  Click here to read that post.

Holmes needs to hold another press conference so he can tell us, and his wife, what the heck all of this is really all about.  But I suspect he is going to hide now that his issues have been outed.

What did the people of Fullerton do to deserve this mess?

Steve Poizner’s personal handler is Carona’s buddy Mike Schroeder

I wrote off Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Poizner weeks ago.  And now one of my pajaritos has reported that his personal escort at this weekend’s California GOP Convention is none other than Mike Schroeder, the one-time adviser to disgraced former O.C. Sheriff Mike Carona.

Poizner is not going to be our next Governor.  If you were thinking of voting for him just know that he is Schroeder’s guy.  That should be enough to send most folks packing.

You can read about the other Talibani Republicans who are backing Poizner at this link.

UPDATE:

The OC Weekly is reporting that Schroeder has been evading attempts to serve him:

Spotted Michael J. Schroeder–the black Hummer driving dark lord of Orange County Republican politics–in public lately? Legal process servers certainly haven’t and they’re a bit frustrated. They’ve been repeatedly foiled at Schroeder’s Xerox Centre offices in Santa Ana and at the hillside Corona del Mar home he shares with wife Susan Kang Schroeder, public affairs counsel to District Attorney Tony Rackauckas.

The servers want to hand Schroeder, a lawyer and close adviser to Mike Carona, a subpoena ordering him to undergo a deposition before ex-Assistant Sheriff George Jaramillo’s upcoming civil trial against the county.

Why the fuss over a little warm weather?

To believe in Global Warming or, in the new nomenclature, “Climate Change”, you have to believe in three things:

1. That carbon in the atmosphere can create climate change.
2. That there is global warming and human behavior is its primary cause.
3. That the consequences will be catastrophic

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

32,000 scientists now dispute the claims of global warming. Evidence of “climate change” is consistently found to be misrepresented (the floating polar bears) and now, misinterpreted.

According to bloomberg.com

A glitch in satellite sensors caused scientists to underestimate the extent of Arctic sea ice by 500,000 square kilometers (193,000 square miles), a California- size area.

Now, of course that won’t be enough for the dogmatists. “Giant ice sheets are still breaking off into the ocean!” Maybe we’ll be able to start farming Greenland again! But I digress…

A little further digging and you can find out that, in fact, the Global Sea Ice has not shrunk since 1979 but instead has grown by 22,000 square kilometers!

Now all those who claim to be interested in America’s status in world opinion and who believe in climate change have themselves in a catch 22. As long as they continue to blame western CO2 for death and destruction around the globe, green groups and third world governments will step up their demands that the West recompensate with wealth transfers and financial compensation.

But even this administration isn’t about to try that. Its a losing argument since developing nations like China will soon surpass us. Instead, they will fight back with “carbon tariffs“, which will create more hostility. Ultimately, there is now a growing risk that the whole global-warming scare is creating more anti-Western hostility and further loss of influence on the international stage.

Good job Democrats! Keep up the positive vibes! You’ll be flat on your belly like Libertarians in no time!

O.C.’s Mexican Consul, Carlos Rodriguez y Quezada, fits right in with Pulido and Bustamante

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

When Carlos Rodriguez y Quezada replaced the very popular Mexican Consul in Santa Ana, Luis Miguel Ortiz Haro, many residents complained - and now they are incensed as Quezada has turned out to be an elitist stooge.  All he ever talks about is an art exhibit he is bringing to the Bowers Museum in September.  And he is such an ass that he has allegedly called some of his fellow countrymen “mojados,” or “webacks.”

I imagine that Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido and lame Santa Ana Councilman Carlos Bustamante must love this guy.

Daffodil Altan has written a fantastic expose of this creep over at the O.C. Weekly.  Click here to read that article.  Below are a few excerpts:

The new consul, those in attendance allege, is neglecting and, in many cases, offending and alienating the Mexican citizens in the county he's being paid handsomely (close to $10,000 per month) to serve. Allegations of nepotism, elitism and favoritism all at the hands of the consul and his deputy consul, Manuel Herrera, have swirled throughout the county and the Spanish-language print and television media since last summer. The situation heated up just before Christmas, when half a dozen longtime employees were fired without warning or reason and banned from setting foot in the consulate office. Three of them in attendance tonight have gone public with their demands of the consul and the Mexican government for an explanation.

Rodriguez y Quezada did indeed have his own style. He moved his office back upstairs, discontinued Miercoles Paisano, and installed metal detectors, microphones and more security guards in the downstairs waiting room. The consulate's closing time changed from a flexible ?4(-ish) p.m. under Ortiz Haro to a prompt, security-guard-backed shutting of the doors at 2 p.m.

A year ago, he told the Weekly he was interested in promoting the arts and in engaging the community at large with Mexico's vast cultural offerings. "It's not all about ID cards and passports," he said. Since taking office in Santa Ana, he says in a recent interview, he has brought opera singers and pianists to town for concerts, sponsored film screenings, and given a presentation at Taco Bell Headquarters during a Pepsi-sponsored mariachi event (to the chagrin of those in the community who remember the protests against Taco Bell at those same headquarters in 2004 because of substandard working conditions for the chain's Florida tomato pickers).

Open Primary threatens both red and blue hacks

We don’t have to guess what will happen when California voters pass Abel Maldonado’s Open Primary measure.  We already approved such a measure a few years ago.  And sure enough, back in 2000, two Orange County conservative Republicans got whacked by moderates.   Jim Righeimer lost to Tom Harman, in a State Assembly race, and Bruce Matthias lost to Lynn Daucher in a State Assembly race.

Know this - Matthias was a former Chief of Staff to John Lewis.  This is why Red-faced County editor Matt “Jubal” Cunningham hates Daucher so much.  And this is why he really hates Open Primaries even more.  Lewis hacks don’t normally lose elections - but Matthias did - and he lost because of the Open Primary.

Is this why Cunningham is using Facebook to attack Maldonado?  Probably.  It is interesting that Cunningham chose to attack Maldonado only, ignoring the other Republicans who voted to pass the State Budget and to raise our taxes.

I don’t know that Cunningham is a racist per se, but he is certainly guilty of race-baiting.  And now he and his red-faced cohorts are running scared because the Open Primary is going to destroy their careers.  Cunningham will be wrecked as will Jeff Flint, Jon Fleischman, Michael Schroeder, John Lewis, etc.  Their candidates will not win - they will all be losers like Righeimer.  And that is a good thing for the people of California.

As for the Democrats, they too will be punished by the Open Primary.  In particular, the union lackeys who vote for tax increases will be in trouble.  Moderates like State Senator Lou Correa will be fine, but useless union hacks like Jose Solorio will be in dire straits.

My recommendation for Cunningham and company is that they learn how to do something useful for a living.  Their political consulting work is going to go down the drain…

Obama banishing 4 Bush accounting gimmicks: Delivers Transparency

A recent NYTimes article details President Barack Obama’s determination to bring truth and transparency to our nation’s budget.  For his first annual budget next week, President Obama has banned four accounting gimmicks that President George W. Bush used to make deficit projections look smaller. The price of more honest bookkeeping: A budget that is $2.7 trillion deeper in the red over the next decade than it would otherwise appear, according to administration officials.   Eeek!  Well, at least we know where the starting point is going to be.

The new accounting involves spending on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Medicare reimbursements to physicians and the cost of disaster responses.  But the biggest adjustment will deal with revenues from the alternative minimum tax, a parallel tax system enacted in 1969 to prevent the wealthy from using tax shelters to avoid paying any income tax.
Mr. Obama's banishment of the gimmicks, which have been widely criticized, is in keeping with his promise to run a more transparent government.

"The president prefers to tell the truth," he said, "rather than make the numbers look better by pretending."   –Peter R. Orszag, Director of the Office of Management and Budget

Some other details worth noting:

President Bush never included the costs of his wars in the Budget.  He would routinely ask Congress for supplemental appropriations during the year.  For Medicare, Mr. Bush routinely budgeted less than actual costs for payments to physicians, although he and Congress regularly waived a law mandating the lower reimbursements for fear that doctors would quit serving beneficiaries in protest.  Mr. Obama will budget $401 billion over 10 years for higher costs and interest on the debt. He will also budget $273 billion in that period for natural disasters. Every year the government pays billions for disaster relief, but presidents and lawmakers have long ignored budget reformers' calls for a contingency account to reflect that certainty.

Making government responsible and transparent?  What a welcome concept!  Nice Job, Mr. President!

A NEW TAX BREAK FOR HOMEOWNERS

I don't make stuff up. Last month, in a column about tax planning, I mentioned that non-itemizers could claim an additional standard deduction of up to $1,000 for property taxes paid in 2008 and 2009. I did so almost in passing, intending simply to remind readers of a new tax break for homeowners that has been reported in the news. But since that column ran, I've received dozens of e-mails from interested readers.

More Coming Soon!
