Iran: A Silent Protest in Stone and an American Computer Wizard

….named Austin Heap    Link and his friends have become instrumental in the resistance fight in the Iran Election protest.

In the upcoming days, Daniel Colascione and I will release a new program to provide unfiltered internet access to the people of Iran. A software package for Windows, Mac and Unix systems, called Haystack, will specifically target the Iranian government's web filtering mechanisms.
Similar to Freegate, the program directed against China's "great firewall," once installed Haystack will provide completely uncensored access to the internet in Iran while simultaneously protecting the user's identity. No more Facebook blocks, no more government warning pages when you try to load Twitter, just unfiltered Internet.
The network will be supported by donated high-quality servers outside of Iran. We will be able to provide an individual user with unfettered internet access that costs the donor $0.015 to $0.0375 per month.
Proxyheap, the precursor to Haystack, was launched on June 22 just ten days after the election

The group, Mourning Mothers have planned mass gatherings to honor the memory of fallen protesters.Twitter users, you can add this twitter link to follow the heroic events unfolding in Iran:  http://twitter.com/IranRiggedElect http://twitter.com/iran_translator

We are in the process of stress testing the network of servers and verifying their functionality. The program will initially be made available at http://haystack.austinheap.com but will shortly thereafter be available through other distribution mechanisms to ensure maximal availability on the ground in Iran.

The Khamenei/Ahmadinejad government has been extremely effective at silencing prominent members of the opposition. But the uprising in Iran was not the result of top-down leadership, it was the result of individuals using whatever means they had at their disposal to organize and communicate. We want to continue to support, in whatever way we can, those who started this and will lead it forward: the people

Anyone interested in keeping up with the latest developments in Iran, please click the LINK to find out how the clerics are resisting the farce elections in Iran and what will transpire next.

Note:  Since official results of Ahmadinejad's win, only 11 countries congratulated Ahmadinejad on his 'victory'. These countries are Tajikistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkey, the People's Republic of China, Oman, Russia, Qatar and Venezuela.

Feel Free to add additional links and resources for the freedom fighters in Iran.

With Ensign, Sanford and Palin out, is Romney next?

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Now that John Ensign, Mark Sanford and Sarah Palin have destroyed their political careers the only guy left to run for the GOP presidential nomination is Mitt Romney.  No time like the present to start taking him apart too!

I found the info below noting several reasons why Romney sucks:

1. He supports torture: Romney is an outspoken supporter of "enhanced interrogation techniques," or as the layman calls it, torture.

2. He wants to enlarge Gitmo: Romney stated at a 2008 Republican primary debate that he would double the size of the prison at Guantanamo Bay if elected president. Would that be before or after he dissolves the Supreme Court, which has ruled that the indefinite detentions of terror suspects at Gitmo was unconstitutional?

3. He supports teen torture camps: This shouldn't come as a surprise if you read the two items above. Romney has been linked to WWASPS camps for troubled teens, which has had several lawsuits filed against it alleging that teens were "locked in outdoor dog cages, exercised to exhaustion, deprived of food and sleep, exposed to extreme temperatures without adequate clothing or water, severely beaten, emotionally brutalized, and sexually abused and humiliated. Some were even made to eat their own vomit."

4. He dodged the draft: Mitt Romney spent the height of the Vietnam War working as a Mormon missionary in France, thanks to a draft deferment his Mormon handlers gave him as "a minister of religion."

5. Gun control flip-flopper: Romney recently changed his opinions on gun control when he realized he would need to suck up to gun owners if he wanted the Republican vote. When endorsing the Brady Bill in 1994, Romney declared it was "not going to make me a hero of the NRA." In August 2006, he joined the NRA.

6. He's a "life-long" hunter: By which I mean a liar. An NRA cap-wearing Romney told New Hampshire voters that he had been a hunter for "pretty much all" in April 2007. The truth soon came out that Romney had only gone hunting twice in his 60 years. If you're going to suck up to gun owners, at least spare them the BS.

7. He tricked voters with a fake pro-life stance: Romney ran for US Senate in 1994 pledging to keep abortion ''safe and legal in this country." As a 2002 candidate for governor, Romney said he would not change the state's abortion laws. He is now running on a pro-life platform. As his top political strategist said in 2005, "He's been a pro-life Mormon faking it as a pro-choice friendly."

8. He uses goons to intimidate his opponents: The security staff of the Romney campaign is well known for pushing around people they don't want near their campaign events. They've also been placed under investigation for impersonating police officers to make threats illegally stop cars belonging to activists working on behalf of other candidates.

9. His campaign spreads lies about his opponents: The Romney campaign has been implicated in a dirty behind-the-scenes whisper campaign aimed at spreading a lie about John McCain's views on abortion. If that fails, maybe they'll claim he fathered black children?

10. He opposes stem cell research: While governor of Massachusetts, Romney tried to veto a bill that would have promoted stem cell research in the state. Luckily, state legislators were not living in the dark ages, and they overturned his anti-science veto.

11. He abuses animals: While moving driving his family from Ontario to Boston in 1983, Romney strapped the family dog to the top of their car for the entire drive. WTF?

12. He's Mormon: Even if you like Mormons, you have to admit that his religion, which has a very negative image, will make Romney unelectable.

And it turns out that Romney is full of hot air on taxes too. “The combined state and local tax burden in Massachusetts increased during Romney’s governorship.[50] According to the Tax Foundation, that per capita burden was 9.8% in 2002 (below the national average of 10.3%), and 10.5% in 2006 (below the national average of 10.8%).[53] (Wikipedia).

And “On December 14, 2005, Romney announced that he would not seek re-election for a second term as governor.”  Isn’t not running for reelection the same as quitting?

“I vant to be alone!” - Sarah Palin says

Greta Garbo was a recluse.  She loved having affairs with important, powerful men, she loved being in movies, she loved acting, she loved the money and fame that goes with her successes.  What she really hated….was the press!  She would have hated the “paparotsy” and their native intrusions into her daily live, affairs and interests.  Seeing her without make-up would have been the end times for Greta Garbo.  Gloria Swanson might well have best portrayed her in “Sunset Boulevard”….  “I’m ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille!”

Greta no doubt would have worn those rimless $700 non-prescription Sarah Palin glasses, made sure that even her camoflage pants were designer, been sure that her family…..never got the upper hand in her life.  So, “Welcome to Sarah’s story on StarSearch”!  Now that she has stepped down as Governor of Alaska will she be on “I’m a Celebrity - and I want out of here!”.  Perhaps, she will go on the reality show “Lost”!  Perhaps, she will co-host the Ellen DeGeneres show to appeal to those liberal voters out there?  Who knows?  Hey, maybe she will be making the announcement on a weekly basis of the latest California Lottery Winners!  Not that the current lady isn’t doing a fine bang up job…..but just think of the possible spike in ratings!

Greta Garbo was a very beautiful Swedish actress.  She lit up the Silver Screen and created a mystique that has lasted through the ages.  She died at 85 years of age.  Her career started in Stockholm, Sweden at age 15 and lasted until she was 36 years of age when she did her last film.  That was 1941.  It might be said that Greta Garbo suffered from a Michael Jackson complex of child abuse and age fixation.  Once Greta stepped out of the public eye….it lasted nearly 50 years.  Greta Garbo was always “an enigma wrapped in a mystery”

As for Sarah Palin, we know not what awaits.  Could she soon become another Oprah or a President…. or a recluse….. of majestic proportions.

Should Internet sales in California be taxed?

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

I usually oppose all new taxes, but there is growing sentiment that online retailers should collect sales tax in each state they do business in and forward that money to the respective states. I think that is fair.

Why should a company like Amazon.com sell books in California without charging sales tax? That is unfair competition to the brick and mortar stores in our state.

The L.A. Times addressed this issue in an editorial today. Here are a few excerpts:

California has considered a law requiring nationwide online retailers to calculate, collect and remit sales taxes that buyers are supposed to pay but rarely do. Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley) introduced AB 178, and Democrats included her approach as part of the budget proposal they sent Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Based on the Legislature’s action, Overstock.com severed its relationship with its California affiliates. Now that Schwarzenegger has made clear he won’t sign the bill, he’s taking credit for Overstock reversing its decision and for protecting Californians from new taxes.

Wait a minute. The governor’s action did not protect anyone from having to pay more tax. Californians owe the $1 billion in use taxes anyway. The only question was whether the law should be changed to require online companies to charge the tax at the virtual checkout counter. It should; but there is a fairer way to do it than the New York-like approach in AB 178.

That approach, after all, does penalize the growing sector of California-based online businesses that match buyers with great deals all over the Web. Many of those businesses would be deemed affiliates, and would be dumped by companies that don’t want state ties to turn into requirements to add sales taxes.

Our state is broke.  Of course we ought to cut more waste from the budget - but allowing giant online retailers to sell products here without collecting sales tax is ridiculous.  Schwarzenegger is wrong on this one - and if that means that California affiliates will be dropped by the unethical online giants, then we ought to ask California’s residents to not spend their money on those websites.

This is not about new taxes.  It is about treating all businesses in our state fairly.  Allowing giant online retailers to undercut our own local stores is just plain nuts!

OOps! “We Misread How Bad the Economy Was” - Joseph Biden, VPOTUS

The unabated destruction of the Middle Class continues in California.  Middle Class workers are losing it all.

Joseph Biden, Chair of the White House’s Middle Class Task Force,  says, “We Misread How Bad the Economy Was”, according to the Huffington Post, LINK

No s!ht, Sherlock! And California, ESPECIALLY, doesn’t get it.

Homework for ALL Teachers and ALL Classifieds:   Submit your ideas to Joseph Biden Directly.   If your public job is being threatened, the least you can do is go register your concerns and comments at the Middle Class Task Force site  LINK The SAUSD is destroying your community and lifestyle.  SAUSD policies and practices are a direct threat to middle class workers and working class families who have long supported the school district.  The VERY LEAST you should do is send VP Biden a link to this blog and tell him to read how lives and careers are being thrown away by the reckless management that runs the show at SAUSD.  Maybe throw in a few bad words about how your unions have colluded  with the school district to ensure incredibly high job losses for multiple years, while YOU paid MONTHLY DUES to the union to do this to you.  These Riffs MUST be rescinded.

WASHINGTON — Vice President Joe Biden said the Obama administration “misread how bad the economy was” but stands by its stimulus package and believes the plan will create more jobs as the pace of its spending picks up.

Biden, in an interview airing Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” said the nation’s 9.5 percent unemployment rate is “much too high.”

Biden said it’s premature to say whether the country will need a second stimulus package.

“The figures we worked off of in January were the consensus figures and most of the blue chip indexes out there,” Biden said.

“We misread how bad the economy was, but we are now only about 120 days into the recovery package,” Biden added. More jobs will be created in coming months, he said.

Biden noted that the $787 billion economic stimulus package was set up to spend the money over 18 months. Major programs will take effect in September, including $7.5 billion for broadband Internet service, plus new money for high-speed rail and the nation’s electrical grid, he said.

Mission Viejo’s 4th of July TEA Party

Yesterday marked the third 2009 anti-tax TEA Party organized by the local Saddleback Republican Assembly, SRA, a chartered unit of the statewide CRA.
At this event they added two new petitions which one of the event organizers informed me would be sent to our elected officials in Washington, DC. The title of one states “Reject Universal Health Care.” The brief text reads “We reject medical decisions being made by government bureaucrats, and we demand to keep our own insurance and protect the privacy of medical data. We strongly oppose socialized, government-run, universal healthcare.”

The second petition is entitled: “We, the undersigned, Oppose the Cap and Trade Initiative!” Its text reads: “This national energy is likely to be the biggest tax in American history. Remember, it isn’t just about energy, it’s about American jobs!”

Having spent a few hours in one of the two booths I noticed voters from as far away as Fallbrook to Fullerton signing in support of these protest documents. A third petition, getting favorable citywide support, was the RECALL of councilman Lance MacLean that I will address at the end of this post.
Some angry taxpayers arrived hours prior to the 7 p.m. start time carrying home made signs with a wide list of anti-tax and government waste grievances.

As a former president of this SRA unit I was asked to address the gathering which, at that time, totaled around 100 citizens.
As a member of the California chapter of “Americans for Prosperity” I opened with a brief remark on our delivering around 20,000 petitions to Sacramento last year protesting any tax increase. I then mentioned the colonial activists in Boston who triggered the push back to taxation proposed by Great Britain’s Prime Minister Grenville over 200 years ago.
We shall continue in the footsteps of the Loyal Nine, who later became known as the “Sons of Liberty”, to carry our message to every elected official who promotes oppressive tax policies and loss of our freedoms.

My closing comment was based on our Nov 5, 2002 Sample Ballot where I quoted from Mission Viejo council candidate Lance MacLean’s text, read by our 50,000 registered voters, which read in part: “Oppose all tax increases or special assessments.” As I paused the crowd began to applaud.

Note: Based on his “thank you” notes to those of us who campaigned for him we were snookered. Then I provided the rest of the story as I read from the 2004 Ballot where Lance (and council member Trish Kelley) promoted a TOT tax increase called Measure K.
Anyone following the financial status of Orange County cities have read of program and staff reductions due to the recessions while at the same time we hear Lance MacLean and councilman Frank Ury boasting about how much money we have in our reserves. If that be true than perhaps Mr. MacLean can justify his closing Argument in Favor of Measure K which read. “we urge you to approve a 10% TOT rate by voting “YES”.

When questioned Lance replies: “I didn’t promote a tax increase. We were only giving the voters an opportunity to decide if they wish to tax themselves.”  This action is but one of the grievances listed on the Petition for his removal by the RECALL process.

As I departed prior to the fireworks and SRA booth closing I do not have a count of the signatures on any of the petitions.
As one of the 50 plus signers of the RECALL application I want to be fully transparent in writing about this volunteer activity.

Poor poor rumor mongers…

The FBI reiterated Saturday, telling the Los Angeles Times for a story Sunday, that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was not investigating Palin’s activities as governor, a former mayor or in any other capacity. “There is absolutely no truth to those rumors that we’re investigating her or getting ready to indict her,” Special Agent Eric Gonzalez, the bureau’s Alaska spokesman, said.

** Editors note:  Since a certain Democrat shill (and judged by Juice Readers as the biggest hack in Orange County) on this blog continues to maintain my ”party status”,  I have to say that they are far behind on the “third party or DTS bandwagon”. This political activist hasnt been able to vote for a GOP candidate for President since 1992 and worked the hardest year of my LIFE all the way to November against George W in 2000 on another Presidential campaign. However, that person who shall go nameless has no trouble admitting that he will vote for Socialists and Liberals whenever it is convenient.

“How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country,” Sarah Palin said,  ”And though it’s honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term (BO we hardly knew ye, and nobody cared), of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make.”

The abruptness of her announcement and the mystery surrounding her plans have fed widespread speculation. But Palin attorney Thomas Van Flein on Saturday warned legal action may be taken against bloggers and publications that reprint what he calls fraudulent claims.

“To the extent several websites, most notably liberal Alaska blogger Shannyn Moore, are now claiming as ‘fact’ that Governor Palin resigned because she is ‘under federal investigation’ for embezzlement or other criminal wrongdoing, we will be exploring legal options this week to address such defamation,” Van Flein said in a statement. “This is to provide notice to Ms. Moore, and those who re-publish the defamation, such as Huffington Post, MSNBC, the New York Times and The Washington Post, that the Palins will not allow them to propagate defamatory material without answering to this in a court of law.”

He also told the Anchorage Daily News that Palin wasn’t in any criminal legal jeopardy. ”I can say definitively I am aware of no criminal investigation whatsoever involving Sarah Palin. Zero,” he said.

I have never said I would vote for this woman. However, I am quite disturbed about the ability of my fellow citizens to judge that someone who leaves office after little more than a year “FOR HIGHER OFFICE” and abandons his state to corrupt politicians is GREAT AND HOPEFUL AND TRUSTWORTHY, yet someone who says “Well, not gonna run for re election, so why not let the next person get started?” is called names…

HIGHER OFFICE is not an aspiration I judge to be all that admirable. Downright skanky, if you asked me.

Sarah Palin Favorability

Almost a year after capturing the attention of the political world as John McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin remains a broadly popular figure within the Republican Party, despite receiving mixed reviews from the public as a whole.

Palin received her highest overall favorability rating of 50% in mid-September 2008, shortly after McCain named her as his vice-presidential running mate. At that time just 34% expressed an unfavorable opinion of the Alaska governor, while 16% offered no opinion. But her favorability slipped later in the campaign. In mid-October, more people expressed an unfavorable opinion of Palin (48%) than a favorable opinion (42%). Since the election, public views of Palin have shifted only slightly.

Unlike Romney, Palin's ratings continue to be much better among conservative Republicans (80%) than among moderates and liberals in the party (62%). And while positive views of Palin have slipped among non-evangelical Republicans (from 77% to 67%), they remain overwhelmingly positive among white evangelical Republicans (84% now, 85% last October).

Would You Trust This Guy to Spend Your Money?

Dick Jones  can't seem to understand that it is ILLEGAL to expand Redevelopment for the bogus reasons he babbles about. "Blight" must exist in order to legally expand Redevelopment, and it doesn't exist. This clip is 7 minutes long, but it's well worth the watch. Click here to watch the clip.

Mrs. Smith Should Go To Washington

Any politician willing to treat their job as a temporary one is a politician worth looking at.

Like most everyone else, I sat back and scratched my head in consternation at the announcement that Sarah Palin was resigning as governor of Alaska. Its either a bold or stupid move, I thought. I placed it on the slow cook burner in my brain and let it soak in. At first glance, you say “Well thats a mistake! She shot herself in the foot!” Then I asked myself “What happens when you decide you dont want to run for re election?” Are we all so cynical that we forget that the politician is there for the peoples business?

Certainly, this does her electability no good. She has a much bigger platform and microphone to speak from running for Senate or President in 2010 or 2012 as a sitting governor.  But what if she can help the peoples business in other ways? Its clear that the partisan rancor was heated in Alaska, with those opposing her doing it for the simple reason of her national stature. Palin was drawing larger crowds than Obama late in the election, and that sure did PO a bunch of cultural snobs who would try to convince us that an elite education or someones background are what make them qualified for public office. (IMHO, that is what has gotten us into the trouble we are in)  The peoples work was NOT getting done.

**Editors note and response: It is my opinion that those who bleat “she should have continued in  political office because thats what all other politicians do - unless she’s hiding something.” or “Who does she think she is, special or something?!” really could care less what she might or might not get done for the people. They just want the same political process to go on as usual. The usual distractions and the usual games.

COME ON PEOPLE! How many times over the last three years have you wished Schwarzenneger, or whatever governor from whatever state you are living in, would just go away and let someone else do the job? Anyone can raise the specter of “indictment”, dragging out stories more than a year old from liberal rags without any credibility. They most likely will all come to nothing, as they all have come to nothing in the past. And anyone can be accused of anything.

After Washingtons second term was over, nearly everyone begged him to run for President again. He declined, believing it would set a bad precedent. Jefferson also refused to serve a third term, noting ”history shows how easily long term public service degenerates into an inheritance.” Ben Franklin insisted that public service not be a full time job or career.

What a great precedent! When you can no longer do your job as an elected official because people are more interested in political gamesmanship than getting work done, you step aside! Imagine what that could do for California…

Politicians have the same staying and survival power as cockroaches. A congress with an approval rating of 13% saw 90% of its member re-elected. Anyone who says Palin simply wasnt going to win re-election are delusional. Regardless of their approval, politicians are re-elected. Yet Palin not only didnt want to be re-elected, but when it came time to leave, she knew that someone else who has her same agenda and priorities (And make no mistake, her Lt Governor shares her views) would be able to get more done in the time that was left. Imagine that!

The only principle that our parties still hold are: Get elected at all costs! More and more people are starting to notice that parties and politicians are messing things up only so they can hang around to fix them. If you’re still brainwashed by the two party system, maybe its time to broaden your thinking.

For those who believe your government is at stake, declare your independence! You vote for Republicans and get bigger government and more spending. You vote for Democrats and get even BIGGER government and even MORE spending. We vote for candidates from the two parties who promise ethics, and the Republicans give us the House Intern scandal and the Democrats bring us Charlie Rangel, Fannie Mae and Chris Dodds sweetheart mortgage deals!

A Progressive Republican is no different to me than a Progressive Democrat. The state puts your freedoms aside for different reasons, but it all gets to the same place.

“Government is not reason. It is not eloquence. It is FORCE. Like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never, for a moment, should it be left to irresponsible action.” - George Washington

It would have been irresponsible to continue in her job when someone else can get the peoples work done. THAT IS A POLITICAN FOR THE PEOPLE: GO AWAY WHEN WE DONT NEED YOU ANYMORE.

THANK YOU SARAH. Maybe Nancy and Harry and 80% of the rest of them will learn SOMETHING. Some of them have been in office longer than kings and dictators.

Media “big game” hunting in Alaska violated Fish & Game rules

On Alaska’s www.wildlife.alaska.gov web site Governor Sarah Palin’s welcome message reads: “As you embark on your hunt this year, please help preserve Alaska’s hunting heritage by practicing safe, respectful and responsible hunting techniques…” The message goes on to read: “Every hunter is responsible for knowing the current regulations and bag limits, which may change from year to year.”

As I read the Alaska general hunting restrictions there are specific seasons based on parts of the country and game being hunted. Sarah Palin has been game for reporters virtually nonstop from August 30th until today.

While the Alaska Dept of Fish and Wildlife mention hunting big game with a muzzle loader equipped with a scope they overlooked hunting with a laptop and cell phone which are surely more powerful weapons as confirmed by the latest news.

They also state “you must be in possession of a resident or no resident hunting license and appropriate harvest ticket, permits and locking tag for all restricted weapon hunts.”

While these regulations include big game, such as brown and black bears to Caribou and Moose, I could not find any reference to hunting elected officials. Further, governor Palin has been in the gun sites of reporters since being named as the running mate for presidential candidate John McCain on August 30th of 2008.

This post is not an apology on her behalf. Investigative reporters need to be consistent in digging up dirt on candidates and elected officials representing all political parties. However, they surely went over the top dragging in the Palin children. Trying to protect them from further scrutiny may be a major factor in her decision to step down later this month.

I recall accounts of Jenna and Barbara, president Bush’s twin daughters “and their attempts to buy alcohol.” The report follows to characterize the media coverage saying “it was inevitable. It was inevitable because there is absolutely no case for wide public scrutiny of two 19-year-olds who did not themselves choose to run for office, have not sought to cash in on their father’s fame, and seem inclined to preserve their privacy. The question of whether journalists should cover the children of politicians is often miscast. The choice to minimize coverage is often said to be a way of “protecting” the politicians. Let’s see if the media places Sasha and Malia under the same powerful microscope while they live at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

In reading another Juice post you find reference to multiple charges, most of which were dismissed while other are still open.  Perhaps I am mistaken but the allegations against governor Palin fail the test of the phrase in the Constitution at Art. II Sec. 4, “Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”

Given time, and through the use of technology, we will find every skeleton in your closet.

My sense is that you do not step down as governor of a state if you have any aspirations of running for a spot on the top or bottom of a ticket for the White House in 2012.

Juice readers. Notice I purposely have avoided any discussion about her qualifications which are an entirely different issue as addressed by others.
