It could be that the Government Health Care plan is partially dead. The so-called “Public Option” may be off the table. That doesn’t mean we don’t have to be ever vigilant that they won’t look to “regulate” your private health insurance right out of business anyway. But its a step in the right direction. So, what’s next?

Social Security. That’s right. The Holy Third Rail of politics. President Obama outlined his ideas of reforming Social Security during his coronation and expanded on his plan this summer. It’s a “more taxes now”, “more taxes later”, “problem gets worse” formula. Liberals squeal like piggie in Deliverance when Social Security insolvency is discussed, but a “soak the rich” feature certainly should help mollify. And they will never admit it, but the way the Obama Administration is going about it, they are going to “end Social Security as we know it.” Isn’t that cute? I will explain.

“People who think that they are getting something for nothing, by having government provide what they would otherwise have to buy in the private market, are not only kidding themselves by ignoring the taxes that government has to take from them in order to give them the appearance of something for nothing. They are also ignoring the strings that are going to be attached to their own money when it comes back to them in government benefits.” http://www.capmag.com/article.asp?ID=4589

The mushrooming payments coming due as millions of babyboomers prepare to retire are going to REALLY push the limits of what National Debt the country can carry now that the giant Obama giveaway is fully understood. We simply CANNOT afford to go any deeper into debt. The illusion that Social Security can provide pensions more cheaply than a private retirement plan is the political triumph of leftist illusions and baby boomers are going to pay the price big time.

So what are the choices?

Well, first let’s examine President Obama’s plans. First, he will assess social security taxes on incomes above $250,000. One liberal columnist noted with satisfaction that this will bring the top rates back to where they were in the 70’s, before our economic boom of the last quarter century. Smart, right? According to the Tax Policy Center, Obamas tax policies already are pushing the total tax on labor in those brackets to close to 60%, and in states like California and New York, they will be even higher.

“Suppose your household consists of you and your spouse, each earning wages of $150,000 per year. Currently, you are each subject to the payroll tax up to $102,000 of wages, so together you are taxed on $204,000. Under the Obama plan, you’d be taxed again on another $50,000 of wages.” http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121435112024101581.html

At the current payroll tax rate of 12.4% – 6.2% from wage-earners and 6.2% from their employers – your household would be looking at a tax hike of $6,200 per year. Those of you who consider yourself middle class and paying taxes on $204,000 a year are going to notice that tax hike, aren’t you? And just wait til Obama starts including capital gains and interest on savings. Then the fun will REALLY begin.

President Obama and the Democrats have yet to figure out one significant detail. Are those “rich” paying significantly higher taxes going to get correspondingly higher benefits when they retire? Isn’t that “FAIR”? One of the unassailable features of the Social Security program has always been, the more you pay in, the more you get back. I know I like it when I get my statement. To “unhook” that feature from Social Security in order to maintain its short term viability “Social Security would stand revealed not as a work-related contributory retirement system, but simply as a tax-funded welfare and income-redistribution program.” This would end “Social Security as we know it.” I mean, in a welfare program we can decide to cut benefits at any time. As well, according to the Social Security Administration, this only makes up about a third of the expected shortfall Social Security is going to see in the coming baby boom retirement. Now, here’s where it gets worse.

The more taxes the Obama plan collects, the worse shape Social Security is in. Collecting taxes and saving them in the Social Security Trust Fund relies on the U.S. redeeming the Treasury bonds the “lockbox” holds. Understand? And there’s only one place the money to redeem those bonds comes from – more taxes plus interest. Pay for President Obamas Social Security plan today, pay for it again in 20 years. Sweet!

Al Ramirez for US Senate. Who is Al Ramirez anyway?

We at the Orange Juice give candidates for elected office a chance to be heard. For that reason I am posting the following email from south county.
Republican Al Ramirez is running for US Senate to oppose Barbara Boxer
“Friends,

California is in a jam. Our leadership at the state and federal level has failed us in so many areas it is hard to number them. One of the worst of the problems is the mass exodus of jobs from the state. Al Ramirez is running for the US Senate from California and he is the only candidate that can beat Barbara Boxer in that race. Al is dedicated to winning and bringing back jobs to the great state of California.”

It has been my privilege to create Al’s first Internet ad through my company, Thomas Smith Productions. Please go to this link on You-Tube and view the ad.

This post is NOT an endorsement of his candidacy either by myself or the Orange Juice blog family

Al Ramirez’

Al Ramirez is an American all the way. Both of his parents are Americans. In fact, his family history covers no less than 6 generations of American continental history. He is the great, great grandson of descendents of Spanish colonists who were migrating through what was then the Louisiana Territory.

Al Ramirez first started visiting LA in 1997. He established a residence in Santa Monica, CA in 2002. He is a veteran telecommunications sales professional who’s been active in a variety of technology networking groups delivering cutting edge solutions that helped revolutionize the Internet for businesses and consumers all across America. Al Ramirez is seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. Senator from California in the June 2010 primary elections.

The NFL and Jerky QB’s!!!

Being a huge fan of professional football since the days of Norm Van Brocklin, Otto Graham, Bob Waterfield, Y.A. Tittle  and Sonny Jurgensen……sometimes you just have to wonder:  Who are these newbie personality quarterbacks?

The Manning Brothers are a prime example:  Althought Eli is most likeable, Payton and his daddy Archie…..have always been bugging examples of condescending eloquence.  Fran Tarkenton was another example of just awful ego self aggrandizement.  Today, we are fast accumulating a vast array of very jerky quarterback personalities.  Let’s start off with the resurgence of Michael Vick.  Mikey is going to have a tough time getting the “doggie doo doo” off his shoe in the coming season with the Philadelphia Eagles!  His solo winning record of 10 and zero will be required for him to reach any sort of redemption.

Then there is Jay Cuttler……what a nerd.  He was stupid in college and he is even worse now that he has left Denver and gone to Chicago!  Mouthy Quarterbacks are not attractive…..no matter how cute people have told them that they are.  We offer strong advice to Detroit quarterback rookie Matthew Stafford and to our own Mark Sanchez of the New York Jets……to stay relaxed and keep your mouths shut.  Let your skill and ability show itself on the field of play….not at the press conference afterwards.  Cuttler’s blaming his poor performance on Devon Hester or the fact that it was just a pre-season game……tells volumes about his character.  As traditional Bear fans for many years……..it will be hard to root for “the other guys” in 2009!

How about Ben Rothlesberger?  We still love Terry Bradshaw.  But, ”Gentle Ben” of Pittsburgh - is neither Gentle or aware much of how his character affects kids around the nation and the world.  He has been a constant center of controversy, starting with the motorcycle accident, rape allegations and what more…..we have no idea!   We keep waiting for the next shoe to drop!

Luckily, there are a bunch of new kids coming on board to the NFL which might be able to change the negative impression…..that Quarterbacks are all jerks today!  Tony Romo with Dallas is OK….but seems to suffer from “tragic flaw syndrome” as well – whether that includes the ghosts of Terrell Owens or Jessica Simpson we will have to see.  How about Tom Brady….Mr. Perfect?  We love Tom, but can he maintain his technical and mechanical perfection?  Luckily, Tom has learned to “shut up” nicely…..no matter what the latest Patriot  controversy.

How about Donovan McNabb?  He now has Michael Vick backing him up in his waning last years….The Eagles have now lost their “animal lover” fan base!  Or what about Brady Quinn?  The Cleveland Browns have been just so  pathethic……and Brady Quinn was always “jerky”, even at Notre Dame!   If Quinn can’t keep his mouth shut……..this is going to be another very terrible year for Cleveland.

So, who are the good guys?  Are there any quarterbacks that are worth their salt?  Where are the John Brodies?  Where are the Joe Montana’s?  How about Phillip Rivers of the Chargers?  So, so?  Let us hope that many of the “rookies” coming out of college will get the message and realize that talent is based most on the ”likeability” from your teammates.  Based on your own native humility!  Based on values and teaching that offer others and the younger generation  a strong sense of giving and caring by example.

There is also Joe Flacco, the new Quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens.  So far, he has not stepped on his own shoe…..and we wish him well in 2009.    How about Matt Ryan?   Will this kid be able to push Chad Pennington off the starting grid in Atlanta?  We never liked Pennington much and Matt seems like a nice guy – with ability!  Perhaps, we can hope that the creme will rise to the top!

Make a pick!  Choose a QB you think exhibits the leadership, ability and values becoming a great NFL Quarterback in 2009!  The Steve McNair…….tragedy has told us all….that fame is fleeting and that feet of clay can become any of our so-called heroes.  Therefore, it is so incumbent that those that become our  ”transitory heroes” maintain their decorum in society and respect the position that they have obtained……with the willing cooperation of the public.  This should go for every politician in our country as well!  ” Great Rewards require…..Great Responsibility!”

Why does supposed liberal Chris Prevatt want Sean Mill booted from the Santa Ana Planning Commission?

prevatt-hearts-janet

Chris Prevatt, a Liberal OC blogger, wrote recently that our blogger Sean Mill “should resign immediately from the Santa Ana Planning Commission. You should do so for the good of the people of Santa Ana, and your friend Sal Tinajero.”

Prevatt was upset that Mill wrote about a series of County health violations issued to Tom Bonikowski-Nguyen, the Garden Grove Planning Comissioner who is also the husband of Republican Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen.

Why would Prevatt be upset about Mill calling out Bonikowski-Nguyen?

Santa Ana Councilman Sal Tinajero met with Prevatt this week to find out why he was so upset about Mill.  Prevatt brought up the Mill post about Bonikowski-Nguyen – then he asked why Mill wasn’t writing about alleged violations issued to Northgate Gonzalez Markets.  Aha!

The Northgate Gonzalez Markets are a favorite target of Republican Santa Ana Parks and Recreation Commissioner Julie Stroud.  Last year Prevatt asked me why I don’t like Stroud.  He said he had no problems with her.  Of course not!  Neither one supports Latinos, period.

Prevatt has always been quick to go after local Latino politicians, including State Senator Lou Correa and Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez.  And now apparently he is carrying water for Stroud, who absolutely loathes Mill.

Mill has always been a defender of the working poor and Latinos.  Which is why Stroud and her Usual Suspects so despise him.  But why in the world would a Democrat like Prevatt, who is supposed to be a liberal, ally with her?

Could it be because of their mutual friends?  Their circle of amigos includes OC GOP Central Committee member Thomas Gordon, who many think is going to run against Tinajero for the Santa Ana City Council; and Phil Bacerra, a Democrat who was forced to leave Gavin Newsom’s first mayoral campaign after he praised George W. Bush and ripped Al Gore in an article published by the San Francisco Chronicle.

The alliance of Prevatt and Stroud hints at a broader alliance of Jannies and Usual Suspects.  What a nasty convergence!

And Prevatt is not the only one.  Tinajero has fielded a ton of calls lately from this dreadful alliance asking him to dump Mill.  He even got a call from Democratic consultant Richie Ross!  That is their latest angle.  They are threatening not to support Tinajero’s future campaigns – including a possible run for Assemblyman Jose Solorio’s seat, if he does not dump Mill.

Prevatt works for the County of Orange and is known for his activism in the Orange County Employees Association.  He has also been an active supporter of the ECCO PAC.  But both Tinajero and Mill have been lifelong supporters of labor and the GLBT movement.  So why is Prevatt going after Mill?

Prevatt does not even live here in Orange County!  He moved to Long Beach awhile ago.  Why is he sticking his nose in Santa Ana matters in the first place?

Prevatt’s blog recently announced the bogus “acquisition” of the dead Sunny D blog.  What this means is that Sunny D blogger Claudio Gallegos will now blog for Prevatt.  Gallegos was appointed to the Santa Ana ETAC Commission by

Tinajero.  Is he now going to join in the call for Mill’s ouster from the Planning Commission?  Does adding Gallegos mean that the Liberal OC will now cover Latino issues?  I truly doubt that.

Gallegos is an ally of Assemblyman Jose Solorio, who has always been a lap dog to Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido.  Last year Solorio backed Republican Carlos Bustamante for the Santa Ana City Council and Republican Rob Richardson for the Santa Ana School Board.  Solorio also declined to support Lynette Verino for the Rancho Santiago Community College Board.  Gallegos never ripped him for that even though he was supposedly advising Verino.

Of course Gallegos is a Jannie too.  She even attended his birthday party in 2008!  If anything Tinajero should dump Gallegos, not Mill.

Prevatt should apologize to Mill right away – but he won’t.  I encourage our readers to contact his boss, OCEA’s Nick Berardino, by clicking here.  Ask Berardino why he is allowing his lap-dog to go after Democrats who support labor.  And be sure to boycott this year’s ECCO PAC dinner.  Prevatt’s ally Misha Houser is in charge of ECCO’s public relations.  Longtime ECCO activist Jeff LeTourneau quit the ECCO PAC board, according to my pajaritos, because of the conflict of interest posed by Houser, who is a political consultant.

The DPOC needs to clean house and get rid of Prevatt and all of his allies.  Most of them are Jannies.  All of them are worthless.  There is a reason why the DPOC cannot win in Orange County.  Correa and Sanchez won despite the DPOC, not because of them.

Mill is a fighter for the downtrodden and for people of diversity.  Prevatt?  He is just a scumbag political hack.

How do you say “Hice Algo” in Japanese? Yatta!

A very, very bizarrly upbeat song by a band composed of a group of shameless Japanese men wearing nothing but disturbing fig leaf briefs. Odd and upbeat. View and Enjoy!

Yatta!” is a 2001 parody song by a fictional Japanese band called Green Leaves (はっぱ隊, Happa-tai?). The song title, “Yatta“, is the past tense of the Japanese verb yaru (”to do”) and is also the familiar short form of yarimashita, an exclamation meaning “It’s done!”, “I did it!”, “Ready!” or “All right!” The song was first performed as a sketch on the Japanese sketch comedy show Adventures of a Laughing Dog (笑う犬の冒険, Warau Inu no Bōken?), known as “Silly Go Lucky” in the United States, where Happa-tai, a sendup of a stereotypical boy band, is portrayed by some of Japan’s most well-known comedians.

The song and video have since been used as a web culture in-joke on many different websites. The actors who performed as Happa-tai were brought to perform “YATTA!” in the United States on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Host Jimmy Kimmel compared himself to Ed Sullivan introducing the Beatles in their first American performance. LINK

NFL’s Las Vegas Chargers?

While Ed Roski, Jr, part owner of the  LA Kings and LA Lakers, is actively looking to build an NFL stadium in the  City of Industry, today’s Union Tribune reports that the San Diego Chargers are undecided as to where and when to depart Qualcomm stadium as their lease expires in 2020. There is an option in the lease for early departure, at a sizable cost, should they elect to bail out.

As staff-writer Matthew Hall states, the team prefers remaining in San Diego County. Other possibilities are Las Vegas, San Antonio and the City of Industry.

Representatives of MORR/CURE will be monitoring any future move that entails the use of eminent domain or redevelopment agency or city funds that place a private party interest over the needs of the community where said stadium is to be built.
While we do not fault these mega millionaires for asking, we fault the ego driven city council members who provide massive incentives for these private sector gambles. If a stadium pencils out then why do these team owners, whose pockets are somewhat deeper than ours, line up at public troughs for funding?

Following is a slice of today’s Union Tribune story. The full text link will be at the end of the post.
Chargers keeping local options on table

The San Diego Chargers will play at Qualcomm Stadium this season, starting with tonight’s first exhibition game. Beyond that, the team won’t make any guarantees about where it will tangle with opponents.

More than three years into a stadium search, the Chargers’ toughest foe remains a bad economy that has stifled lending.

Mark Fabiani, the Chargers’ point man on the search, said the effort will continue despite the economy and the team’s persistent failure to find a suitable spot in San Diego County.

"Given where we sit, it’s unlikely that a plan surfaces before the end of the season," he said. "We certainly hope to be doing what we’re doing next year, which is working on San Diego County. That’s our hope. That’s our goal."

Andrew Zimbalist, an economist at Smith College in Northampton, Mass., who examines the sports business, said the duration of the search poses problems for the team to relocate within San Diego County.

"If it was going to happen, you’d think it would have happened already, so I think there’s good reason to suspect this is an insuperable challenge for them," Zimbalist said.

The team began asking for a new stadium in 2002, saying Qualcomm Stadium, now 42 years old, created too little revenue for the team to stay competitive. The team initially considered building a new stadium on the current 166-acre site in Mission Valley, but contends the bad economy and building bust made that impossible. It started searching for a new site in 2006.

The Chargers’ lease expires in 2020 and gives the team from Feb. 1 to May 1 every year to notify the city of an intent to move. The team’s cost to break its lease is $54.6 million next year but the amount falls to $25.8 million in 2011, which has led to speculation that if the team departs, it would do so in two years.

There is talk of luring one or even two NFL teams — from Jacksonville, Buffalo, Minnesota, St. Louis, Oakland, San Francisco or San Diego — to that stadium.

Locally, the Chargers don’t have a lot of options at the moment.

•In San Diego, Fabiani continues to meet with the Mayor’s Office and the City Attorney’s Office to give updates on the Chargers’ search and toss around ideas. Fabiani said whenever he discusses possible sites with anyone, a downtown stadium comes up. "It’s the first thing people talk about," he said. "You tell them what you’re working on, and everyone asks about downtown."

Fabiani said he remains optimistic that the team will stay in San Diego County and takes heart that Chargers President Dean Spanos hasn’t thrown in the towel.

"Hopefully," Fabiani said, "once the economy turns around, we will have secured a publicly acceptable site, have a financing plan that people are comfortable with and we’ll be able to go into the credit markets."

Gilbert close. At the end of the day how many “new jobs” are created by a dozen home games a year, including exhibition and playoff games, and a few weekend concerts?

Tustin Abandons Kids as crossing guard budget is slashed

School Crossing Guard

The Tustin News reports that the Tustin City Council has voted to cut over half the funding provided by the City for School Crossing Guards due to budget problems. At the same time, the Tustin Unified School District is cutting much of its daily school bus services, also due to budget problems.

So, we have the schools taking action to put more kids on the street daily going to and from school, and we have the City cutting back on services to keep those kids safe. By chance, could these two government entities have talked to each other before taking these conflicting budget actions? This should not be too much to ask.

Might there be other areas of the City Budget that the esteemed Tustin Council might have cut? How about the darlings of the Chamber of Commerce – the annual Tiller Days and Chili Cook Off events for instance?

The City has chosen to abandon kids, while continuing to party at such City  annual events. The Council will have some explaining to do when the first accident occurs at a crosswalk that previously had crossing guards. Unfortunately, such an accident appears inevitable.  School is about to start.

‘Evil and Orwellian’ : John Campbell and other US conservatives misrepresent NHS

15_08_09-Martin-Rowson-on-001

Incumbent Representative for the 48th Congressional District, John Campbell, has NO town hall meetings about Health Care scheduled.    He will not be taking questions nor will he be giving answers to his constituents about their health care concerns to help shape the new reforms.  Instead, he and his political cronies are busy pushing misinformation about the British health care system, National Health Service (NHS).   Not content to keep the fear mongering at the “Birther” level of slimy tactics to oppose President Barack Obama at every turn, Campbell continues to UN-represent us with his self-serving agenda to deny needed health care reform.  LINK

John Campbell:  No informational Town Halls.  Co-sponsor of the so-called “Birther Bill”.  Right-wing obstructionist for health care reform.   Gee, John, you’ve just got it ALL going on for Orange County, now don’t you?  AND you managed to bring your shameful shilling to an international stage for the world to see.    Sheesh…..

Orange Juice readers, Do you think this fringe political nut accurately represents the general population of the 48th Congressional District?   We’ll find out in next year’s elections when he runs against the former Mayor of Irvine, Beth Krom.    John Campbell SERIOUSLY needs a good TIME OUT from the political spotlight!

In the meantime, here comes the British reaction to Republican attacks against the British healthcare system – This is from The Guardian in a story titled ” ‘Evil and Orwellian’ – America’s right turns its fire on NHS.”        LINK

A $1.2m television advertising campaign bankrolled by the conservative Club for Growth displays images of the union flag and Big Ben while intoning a figure of $22,750. A voiceover says: “In England, government health officials have decided that’s how much six months of life is worth. If a medical treatment costs more, you’re out of luck.” [SNIP]

The degree of misinformation is causing dismay in NHS circles. Andrew Dillon, chief executive of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, pointed out that it was utterly false that Kennedy would be left untreated in Britain: “It is neither true nor is it anything you could extrapolate from anything we’ve ever recommended to the NHS.” [SNIP]

As myths and half-truths circulate, British diplomats in the US are treading a delicate line in correcting falsehoods while trying to stay out of a vicious domestic dogfight over the future of American health policy. [SNIP]

Rick Scott and other anti-healthcare lobbyists tricked unsuspecting Britts into misrepresenting the NHS  according to exploited women in the above video.  Two British women who have become the unwitting stars of a campaign to derail Barack Obama's healthcare reforms yesterday said that their views on the NHS had been misrepresented.    More at the LINK

I’m not going to the ECCO PAC Awards Dinner this year

Jeff LeTourneau splits with ECCO

It is hard to imagine an ECCO PAC Awards Dinner without Jeff LeTourneau. But that is exactly how it is going down this year. Jeff has walked off the ECCO PAC board. (ECCO is the leading gay rights organization in Orange County).

Why would Jeff leave an organization he poured his soul into for so many years? When I heard about this I have to admit I was shocked.

My pajaritos report that Jeff left because the ECCO PAC board has been compromised by consultants. Indeed their Public Affairs Director is Misha Houser, a controversial Democratic consultant who was involved in the disastrous Hoa Van Tran Supervisorial campaign last year.

Thanks to Houser and her fellow Jannies at the Liberal OC, we ended up with Republican Janet Nguyen as our First District Supervisor instead of Democratic Hoa Van Tran.

Other consultants on the ECCO PAC Board include Eugene Hedlund and Bryan Choate, of DMedia.

The problem with having a bunch of political consultants on the ECCO PAC Board is that it gives the appearance of a conflict of interest.  Say for example that ECCO turns down a candidate’s request for an endorsement.  That candidate could question whether or not he was denied the endorsement because he declined to hire Houser or DMedia.

How did Houser end up serving as the Public Affairs Director of ECCO?  Nothing against her, but how did she end up with that job?  Has she ever won a race?  She certainly did not present well in the Hoa Van Tran fiasco.

Houser is now running the Rose Espinoza supervisorial campaign and the John Santoianni campaign for the Anaheim City Council.  I guess they must have the ECCO endorsement in the bag.

LeTourneau wasn’t the only ECCO PAC Board Member to quit.  Harvey Liss quit too.

LeTourneau and Houser also disagree on how to overturn Prop. 8.  LeTourneau wants to do it in 2012.  Houser wants to do it in 2010.  This is a tough call but I do think 2012 will be better with Obama on the ballot once more.

I enjoyed last year’s ECCO Dinner.  But I cannot possibly attend this year’s dinner – not with the mess on ECCO’s Board.  It won’t be the same without LeTourneau.  So I am going to pass.  I hope that LeTourneau starts another organization to support the GLBT community.  For now, I am done with ECCO.

Citizens Insurance

citizensinsurance

One of the truly depressing elements of the recent Health Care Scheme and its proponents is the easy way they switch into "fear the profit" mode. The private entities that make up "Big Insurance" are seen as greedy and manipulative, benefiting from a one-sided equation. They benefit, people suffer. This profit is simply overcharging and if unnecessary charges can be eliminated, things would be more affordable. This had been learned, painfully, to definitely not be the case. Millions suffered to learn it.

One of the BIG LIES about what's going on in Health Care today is that high prices can be attributed to "greed" and people pursuing inflated profits. The truth of that is, the great fortunes in this country have been made by figuring out how to sell something to someone "cheaper". Henry Ford, Rockefeller, A&P, ALCOA, Sears and Wal Mart, just to name a few. Business knows that inflated profits are not the path to success. That is, however, the path of socialized businesses. They have no incentive to hold down their prices because people either have no other choice or they are coerced into participating. Instead of making that one penny of profit on each transaction, the transaction now costs twice as much. But hey! We're not paying for profit!

What Big Insurance is actually engaged in, just like every other free enterprise, is "profit and loss". The hope for profits and the threat of losses is what forces business to produce at the lowest cost and sell what customers are most willing to pay for.  In the absence of these pressures, managers have far less incentive to be efficient, much less keep up with changing conditions. These outcomes represent the only two types of organizations that exist: those that are entirely voluntary and those that involve coercion.

Take the case of Citizens Property Insurance. For the last 17 out of 20 years before Katrina hit, property insurers along the Gulf Coast have lost money insuring property. Rates in Florida skyrocketed as insurers rushed to reap profits on underwriting.  But those profits would only last a short while. Competition was going to drive these profits down to nothing. Insurance companies stay in business in the long-term by investing premium dollars in good years. Real profits come from these investments, not insurance premiums.
Unfortunately, the argument that "government needs to compete" was pushed in Florida, and successfully implemented. What you have in Florida today is a landscape largely emptied of the major Insurance Carriers. USAA, Hartford and now State Farm. What you have picking up the pieces is a puzzle of smaller carriers willing to accept state regulations. Fine, but how many of those companies will actually be solvent enough to pay up if another Ike or Katrina hits? See, without the profit motive, you don't get better business and you don't get better results.

Citizens, because it's a government entity, really can't invest its premium dollars the way the private sector can. Currently it can't really make real investments at all. But letting the company do this would also prove a tremendous problem: government would actually be picking winners in the private market. Government does a pretty bad job at this. Without a very risky portfolio of policies and no ability to make investments, Citizens is doomed when a major storm hits Florida. Taxpayers will end up picking up the pieces and paying all the bills. Needless to say, the common people won't benefit.

Recently, Floridians were polled about the success of Citizens Insurance, and whether they wanted to deregulate the rest of the insurance industry

Under this legislation, Florida homeowners would have three choices for their property insurance:

Homeowners could use the state sponsored Citizens Property Insurance Corporation, which may have lower rates, but which is under capitalized according to the state’s chief financial officer.

Homeowners could use smaller independent insurance companies that have entered the market and whose rates are fully regulated by the state government.

Homeowners could choose one of the larger, financially strong insurance companies and may pay a higher rate but with the assurance the company has the financial capital to pay its claims.

Now, after having heard some of the details of this legislation and how it would affect homeowners, do you favor it or oppose it?

60% support deregulation, allowing insurers to set rates mandated in order to “compete” with Citizens Insurance. Why are we not watching the lessons in our own 50 states? Government competition does not work. Where its put into place, the taxpayer is left either with no choices, less result, or second thoughts, and usually all three. You can read glowing, optimistic predictions of what will happen if we proceed with government health care. "The American people can do anything." Well, yes we can. Which is why we don't need the government to socialize medicine.

B.S. Report–If Obama succeeds in implementing his version of health care you can say good-bye to much of the innovation that our medical care system is largely responsible for. It is our drug companies that develop 70% of the world's new medicines.  It takes over a billion dollars to bring a new medicine to the market.  With Obama punishing the success of drug companies, instead of encouraging them; he will inevitably persuade them not to pursue new remedies.
Our medical care in this country is the best in the world.  Our medical bureaucracy is what needs to be fixed.  Those are very different realities.  Trying the impossible like attempting to make sure everyone has the exact same medical care will only succeed in rationing and eroding the quality of medical care.
Of course, don't expect that those in the Congress would be required to use the same medical care and medical plans that you and I would have to use.  As Orwell says, some animals are a little more equal than other animals.

Rich Republican donor to Prop. 8 dumps his wife of 43 years

Broken Republican Marriage

This story is priceless!  Yet another red-faced Prop. 8 supporter has dumped his wife.  In this case a rich developer tossed his wife of 43 years.  So much for the sanctity of marriage argument!

Here are a few excerpts from an online article about this fiasco:

In July 2008, hotelier and developer Doug Manchester donated $125,000 to help gather signatures for a proposition that would ban same-sex marriage in California. The early money was crucial to getting the initiative—which ultimately passed—on the ballot. At the time, he told The New York Times that he made the donation because of "my Catholic faith and longtime affiliation with the Catholic Church," which preferred that marriage remain between a man and a woman. Indeed, the Catholic Church has vehemently opposed gay marriage. Then again, it's also not too keen on divorce.

On Oct. 9, 2008, Manchester ended 43 years, eight months and nine days of marriage to Elizabeth Manchester by moving out of their La Jolla abode. The couple spent the next several months trying to reach a quiet settlement on how best to distribute millions of dollars in cash and other assets. In July, those talks totally broke down, and Doug started playing financial hardball with Elizabeth, allegedly draining the couple's shared accounts and stealing her mail. On Aug. 6, Elizabeth filed a petition for redress in family court. All of the information in this story comes from those petitions. CityBeat contacted attorneys for both parties, but neither returned calls by press time.

When will these Talibani Republicans learn to stay out of our bedrooms?  They keep blowing smoke about the sanctity of marriage but it seems every last one of them either cheats on their wives or dumps them!  What a joke…
